Book Launch and Public Lecture of Values to Bind and Build: A Reflection of YBhg.Prof. Dato' Dr Tan Chong Tin had been held in KB105, UTAR Sungai Long Campus on 25 January 2019, Friday. Perspectivenof history, law, politics, economic and culture had been analysed to relate to ethnic relationship in Malaysia. New Economic Policy (NEP) is a national strategy which coping with ethnic harmony and unity. The ethnic conflicts will be reduced if everyone adopt the psychological perspective.
This book stated that human is controlled by their underlying emotion, such as disappointed, embarrassed as well as sadness is the concealment of anger. Therefore, emotion is the master which will influences cognitive mind. "Except for the very poor, for whom income coincides with survival, the main motivators of money-seeking are not necessary economic. For billionaire looking for the extra billion... money is a proxy for points of self-regard & achievement... The ultimate currency that rewards or punishes is often emotional." said Daniel Kahneman (Daniel Kahneman, Thinking fast & slow 2011, p342). In this point, I agree that money-seeking for middle class is not fully influenced by economic; for billionaire they are more priority of earning money to show their position n society. But not only for who are not VERY POOR, everyone are seeking money for their own reason, just the difference between demands and needs.
The three most important keys to understand psychological drive to ethnic harmony are "identity", "collective self-esteem", & "dignity". Therefore, World War II, the aggression by Japan on China and SE Asia, the BREXIT, election of Trump, rise of Islamism and so on had occurred due to the underlying reason of enormous influence of this three keys which created nationalism which is a loyalty and devotion to a nation.
The strong work ethnic can brings higher economic productivity when all ethnic groups develop and nature good work ethic. De Mante wrote, "His main teaching was that the primary purpose of work was to build character and virtue. Baigan Ishida's followers turned the concept of work from drudgery and an unwelcome necessity into a religious and philosophical experiences." He added, "The more diligent the individual and the harder he or she worked, the greater the spiritual and emotional satisfaction... A product that functioned properly is not enough. It had to be refined and finished down to the last detail... in every part, not just in the areas normally visible to the users". "As time went by, Ishida's philosophy became the moral standard by which the Japanese measured themselves and others." (Boya Lafayette De Mente. Japan Unmasked. 2005, p142). That is true that satisfied and accomplishment feeling will reach to the max when contribution of time, energy, efforts and so on given by max.
Next, openness is much important to have the better strategy or ways in daily life. As the example, China had demonstrated in decline (from the Ming dynasty) and rise (from 1979) which took advantages in economic competitiveness. Openness included open mindedness which willing to adopt the best from others that known as meritocracy such as accepting and learning the technology from other country. Myanmar doctors subject themselves to have medical studies at other country due to the lack of economic resources and technology. It made them become the doctors who have high technique and knowledge because of the openness and meritocracy.
Besides that, freedom should be emphasized to have the creativity, competence and maturity in politic, economy and social. As example for this statement, loss of creativity and freedom has shown in Arab world which clarified by Akbar Ahmed, a Pakistan scholar who worked in Cambridge explained many of intellectual writers and artists of Muslim have move to USA and UK where give them the freedom of express their creativity instead of Arab world which limited by traditional and cultural thinking. It is important to let people to have freedom in order to find out more talented people.
Soft power had been proposed by a political scientist Joseph Nye which is a concept that attract or co-opt with others rather than coerce (hard power) which is forcing someone to act in involuntary manner by threatening or intimidating. From research can say that goodness is able to attract other's respect efficiently. It can adopt a noncompetitive situation and make people to have more spirit and efforts to do works and give ethnic harmony.
Identity which is individual's sense of self should be concerned by everyone, people should not lost their identity to cater in other people or other groups. People should try to accept other groups rather than lost own identity such as in term of language, cultural and others. In conclusion, people are driven by emotions. Therefore, master your emotion rather than let emotion master yourself.
