March of Penguin (2005) as La Marche de l'empereur in French is a feature-length nature documentary which directed and co-written by Luc Jacquet and co-produced by Bonne Pioche and the National Geographic Society. It is an expository documentary which recording the breeding age of penguins and how they hatch their chick and others.
Documentary films are non-fiction films and they depict not imaginary but real events, those filmmakers are assumed to observe the events and make objective record of the events. Bill Nichols, who proposed six modes of representation which is poetic, expository, observational, interactive, reflexive and performative. Poetic documentary is a film that representing reality via series of fragmented visuals and subjective impressions, incoherent acts and loose associations. Next, expository documentary film is voiceover by authoritative with the combination with series of imageries to give information. In addition, observational documentary film which have no voiceover, no intertitles and no interviews. March of Penguin (2005) is a documentary film that focus on the lives of emperor penguins in Antarctica.
This film is a typically expository documentary which has the voice-of-god commentary and poetic to disclose the information of the breeding process of penguin and the hatching of chick. It start with a branch of penguin that moving on the Iceland and find their partner to do the reproduction of chick.
In conclusion, parents are working hard even sacrificing themselves to feed their child, just like how penguin chick's mother travel to the other side of the Iceland and find food for their chicks.
